Samurai swords can be both ornamental and functional by purpose. There are some people who love to collect swords and keep them around the house in safe box frame. For those of you who desire to learn the ancient martial arts provided you practice extreme caution. Swords can fatally injure when improperly handled. Here are a few guidelines on how to draw a sword without injuring yourself.


Feel the moment

When practicing with a samurai sword, you can wear the traditional Japanese attire. It includes wide bottomed pants, a wrap top, and importantly your sheath and sword with a sash or obi tied around your waist.

Fasten your sash

Secure your sword and sheath in their proper position. Make sure your sheath is securely fastened with your obi at your waist. It should stay in place when you draw the sword but can be moved up a tad when you are about to draw. Check if the blade is in the sheath facing up so you can draw it right into a striking position.

Adjust the sheath

With your left hand, grasp the sword with the sheath pointed down toward the ground. Pull it up very tightly so that the samurai sword is easily removed with your right hand.

Pulling out the sword

Using your right to grasp the handle of the sword, keep your left hand on the sheath to secure it. Quickly but smoothly draw out the sword form its sheath. Keep your right knuckles at the top of the handle to allow you to swing the sword into a chopping motion the instance it leaves the sheath.

Action

Start to chop, cut, or simply sway the sword carefully. Maintain proper distance of your body against the sharp blade. It would great and safe if you have a friend with you during this session.

Final step

Put back the weapon in its sheath. It simply means to reverse the process of taking it out. Pull the sheath up a bit with your left hand and gently slide the sword into place.
